Top 10 Reasons Pool Fences Fail Inspection in Melbourne

By Ehsanullah Rostayee ·

Most pool barriers can be brought up to standard with cheap, easy fixes. Here are the top 10 reasons we see Melbourne pools fail - and what to do about each.

1. Climbable objects in the non-climbable zone (NCZ)

Pot plants, pool pumps, BBQs, and air-con units within 900mm of the barrier are the #1 fail. Fix: move them at least 900mm away.

2. Gate doesn’t self-close from any position

A compliant gate must close and latch from rest at any position. Fix: replace or adjust the spring hinges.

3. Latch below 1500mm

Internal release latches must be at least 1500mm above ground (or 1400mm above any climbable surface). Fix: raise the latch or add a magnetic latch kit.

4. CPR sign missing, faded, or in the wrong place

A current CPR sign must be visible from inside the pool area. Fix: $30 from any pool shop.

5. Gaps under the fence over 100mm

Common with sloping ground or settling. Fix: packers, ground levelling, or a ground rail.

6. Boundary fence used as barrier - but too low

Boundary fences forming part of the barrier must be at least 1800mm on the pool side. Fix: add a topper.

7. Glass panel gaps over 100mm

Loose or shifted glass panels create non-compliant gaps. Fix: re-secure clamps and check spigots.

8. Window opening into the pool area unrestricted

Windows must be limited to a 100mm opening or fixed shut. Fix: install window restrictors.

9. Self-latching gate fails the “shake test”

If the gate rattles open under pressure, it fails. Fix: new latch mechanism or magnetic latch.

10. Pool cover used instead of a barrier

Pool covers do not count as a compliant barrier. Fix: install a proper barrier.
